Imogen Ruth
Integrative Counselling
Welcome!
I'm Imogen, an MNCPS Accredited counsellor based in London, and offering online sessions anywhere in the UK.
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. Many people I work with arrive at this point feeling stuck or disconnected, like something underneath isn't aligned with what the rest of the world sees. Some have noticed familiar patterns, particularly in their relationships, and want to understand why they find themselves in the same places again and again. Others are overwhelmed, caught up in the business of Survival Mode, knowing they want things to change but are so overloaded it's hard to know where to start.
The troubles that bring us to therapy are as varied as the people who carry them, though maybe something you've read here so far resonates with you.
I offer a warm, supportive space for people who wish to understand themselves and their experiences more deeply. I work integratively, drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches to best meet the needs and preferences of each individual I work with. Regardless of the particular flavour of the work we do together, I trust in your innate capacity for growth and positive change, and recognise you as the expert in your own life and experiences.
I pay attention to the social and political context we inhabit, and within which our work together is taking place. I am committed to working anti-oppressively and take every opportunity I can to learn more and grow in this area. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I strive to work in a way that is affirming and cherishing of diversity.

Therapy with me
There are as many ways to Do Therapy as there are therapists. I have been integratively trained, and draw most often from Gestalt and person-centred theories when working with clients.
There is a (somewhat unhelpful!) stereotype of person-centred counsellors as head-nodding and passive 'blank walls'. This is not how I work. I engage in sessions actively and collaboratively, with the aim of helping you make connections and build awareness. Ultimately, though, you set the agenda and the pace. I believe that my role as a counsellor is that of a fellow traveller - we're on your road, and you're leading the way.
I work with all kinds of people, though many of my clients have been parents of young children, solo parents, and people navigating relationship issues, questions of identity, big life transitions, and grief, loss, or bereavement. I am allied with those who belong to the LGBTQIA+ community, those who are neurodivergent, those in non-traditional relationship configurations, and those who do sex work. I will strive to meet you where you are, without agenda.

Sessions
Sessions are weekly, and are 50 minutes long.
I offer both open-ended and time-limited counselling. Open-ended counselling allows us to work together until you decide when it feels like the right time to stop. Time-limited counselling involves agreeing on a set number of sessions at the beginning - with me, this would typically be somewhere between 12 and 28 sessions. At the beginning, we can think together about what might be most helpful for you.
At present I am only able to offer online counselling, however I would like to offer in-person sessions in the near future - if this would be of interest to you, you are welcome to get in touch and let me know that would be your preference.

Fees
Sessions are £80, and this is payable before our session is due to take place.
I operate a lower-cost arm of my practice, which is designed for those without the means to pay the full fee without suffering hardship as a result. This could be because you are unwaged, low-waged, precariously waged, no access to savings, etc. I don’t need you to provide any proof. If you tell me you need it, I trust that you need it.
Lower-cost spaces are time-limited at a maximum of 12 weeks, and are £45 per session. Spaces are limited - I currently do have some availability for lower-cost therapy, and will operate a short waiting list once these spaces are full.
I am working toward being able to sustainably offer lower-cost long-term counselling, and when this is possible, this page will be updated.

Starting the process
Evidence shows that usually, the biggest factor in the efficacy of any kind of therapy is the quality of the relationship between the humans in the room.
If the relationship between me and the person I'm working with is vital to how helpful the work will be, it’s important that we have a proper chance to see if I’m the right therapist for you.
To this end, I offer a free online consultation of up to 50 minutes, where we can explore whether I might be a good fit. You are warmly invited to enquire for more information about this. Please be assured that there is no obligation to continue with counselling with me following your consultation.
